Portrait of Peter Gerjets

Peter Gerjets is a senior scientist at the IWM since 2002 and a professor of learning and instruction at Eberhard Karls University Tübingen since 2003. He and his ‘Multimodal Interaction’ lab investigate the self-regulated exploration of information in multimodal knowledge environments. This includes the use of control gestures, physical control objects, and physiology-based interactions, such as gaze control. These interaction devices are fundamental to the design of hybrid realities, where physical and digital objects and spaces converge. Theoretically, the focus is on the interplay between multimodal interactions and the processing of cognitive, motivational, and emotional information in knowledge contexts. The lab investigates these interactions in relation to resource limitations, self-regulatory processes, and the significance of physical experiences. The results inform the development of innovative digital interaction programmes.

Main Research Topics:

  • The design and optimisation of innovative digital learning environments for formal and informal settings (e.g. virtual reality or multi-touch tables)
  • Sensor-based, real-time assessment of learners' states (e.g. working memory load, attention, or engagement)
  • The use of artificial intelligence in educational contexts (e.g. adaptive learning environments)
