Patterns as an analysis framework to document and foster excellent e-learning design

Christian Kohls
Knowledge Media Research Center

Patterns describe good/best practiced based on the experience of experts. This paper will explore how fitness between a solution form and a given context/situation is critical to the quality of a pattern. To make patterns a useful tool for analysis and reuse, this paper will discuss how context, problem and solution are mapped into different descriptions fields in various pattern formats and which dimensions matter in the context of education and e-learning. It will also discuss how the concept of wholeness and fitness can give us hints about decomposing complex problems into smaller sub patterns. Finally, the recurrence of successful designs leads to the question how patterns emerge and how reliable they are.
