Junior Research Group Neurocognition
ScienceCampus Tuebingen, Cluster: Special Needs – Diagnostics, Intervention, and Social Interaction in Risk Groups
January 2010 - December 2012
ScienceCampus Tuebingen
Introduction
Mathematics difficulties are a grave handicap especially when you are looking for a job. Against this background, it is remarkable that there are hardly any individual differential diagnostic tests for math difficulties for secondary school. In addition, while a growing number of intervention methods are being developed, there are so far no interventions for older children that are based on scientific findings and take individual impairments into consideration.
Research objectives and methods
Foremost, the project adopts the key objectives of the ScienceCampus: information variety, information processing and information exchange. Its specific objective is (i) to extend the multi-modal intervention approach to diagnostic measures for 5th and 6th graders and (ii) based on this to use the adaptive properties of the World Wide Web to implement an online learning platform for mathematics to support learning both in and outside of school.
Concerning general aspects of mathematical advancement in due consideration of the concept of embodied cognition of figures and first steps to implement such concepts to mathematical remediation please see the projets "Media-support for arithmetic learning" and "Embodied learning of numerosities and its use in school contexts".
