Tübingen

Life in Tübingen

A medieval city center with half-timbered houses and small narrow streets, located directly on the banks of the Neckar River, with the castle Hohentübingen and a lively atmosphere – all this contributes to Tübingen's charm. And despite its 800-year old history, Tübingen is one of the youngest cities in Germany due to the almost 30.000 students making up about one third of the city's population.

The history and international reputation of the city is closely tied to the University of Tübingen. It was founded in 1477 and is one of the oldest and most renowned universities in Europe today. The city combines a student atmosphere with research on a top international level. In 2012 the university was distinguished as a University of Excellence. One major focus of the Excellence Initiative was educational research, and in this area, the IWM works closely together with the university.

This close cooperation is also made possible by the geographic proximity – many buildings of the university as well as the IWM itself are very centrally located and close to the old town of Tübingen.
