In formal and informal learning situations, comparative visual search holds a meaningful role for knowledge acquisition. Every time we have to compare two pictures, we try to identify the differences as fast and accurately as possible to reach a useful conclusion. In addition to basic measurements like response time and proportion correctness, gaze recording is very important to, for example, calculate the time required to encode information chunks. Previous studies have shown that increasing distance leads to a decreased number of gaze-shifts between two pictures, suggesting higher visual short-term memory load. In this Ph.D. project we examine how the complexity of the pictures, prior knowledge and person-related factors influence search effectiveness.
