2014-12-03  |   Prof. Friedrich W. Hesse re-elected for vice-president of the German Leibniz Association

During its annual general assembly at the 28th of November in Berlin, the German Leibniz Association elected a new directorate. Prof. Dr. Dr. Friedrich W. Hesse, director at the Knowledge Media Research Center in Tuebingen, was re-elected as scientific vice-president of the Leibniz Association for the next two years. The Leibniz Association is an umbrella organisation for 89 institutions in Germany conducting research or providing scientiftic infrastructure.

The steering committee of the Leibniz Association is responsible for the management and strategic agenda of the research community and represents the Leibniz Association outwards.

The cognitive scientist Hesse is Executive Director of the Knowledge Media Research Center (KMRC) in Tuebingen as well as Head of the Department for Applied Cognitive Psychology and Media Psychology at the University of Tuebingen. He is also initiator of and speaker for the first ScienceCampus in Germany on "Informational Environments".

2014-11-12  |  EU research project MIRROR rated as excellent!
The EU project MIRROR – Reflective learning at work was successfully finished this summer after a runtime of four years and rated as excellent by the European Commission. In MIRROR the KMRC researched together with 14 other partners from 6 European countries how reflective learning (learning based on past experiences) at the workplace can be supported by applications. Research results of MIRROR are now used in further research projects, while in MIRROR developed apps support employees in organisations of different sectors. 2014-11-06  |  Mobile Learning at Hohenheim
In an online-event (german), organized by e-teaching.org on Monday, 10th November 2014 the following projects will be presented: "Hohenheimer Lernorte", "Mobile Learning at Hohenheim" and the Hohenheim App. The event is part of the ongoing special at e-teaching.org featuring "Mobile Learning". The online stream will be recorded and can be watched shortly after the event has taken place.

2014-08-08  |  International Summer School "Self-Regulation in a Digital World" succeeded.

From August, 4th, till August, 8th, 2014, 31 international young researchers took part in the second International Summer School of the Leibniz ScienceCampus Tübingen and the Knowledge Media Research Center at the Black Forest. Under the topic „Self-Regulation in a Digital World“ they worked out and discussed new research questions and methods in three different workshops. Vincent Aleven (Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh), Denise de Ridder (Utrecht University) and Keith Hampton (Rutgers University, New Brunswick) acted as workshop leaders. At the first afternoon Phil Winne (Simon Fraser University, Burnaby) and Malte Friese (Saarland University, Saarbrücken) lectured as keynote speaker. The 31 participants came from universities in Germany, The Netherlands, USA, Sweden and the United Kingdom.

2014-07-15  |  Prof. Dr. Kai Sassenberg (IWM) was elected to the Executive Committee of the European Association of Social Psychology (EASP)

During the 17th General Meeting of the European Association of Social Psychology (EASP), held in Amsterdam July 9-12, 2014, Prof. Dr. Kai Sassenberg was elected to the Executive Committee of the Association. His term of office is six years. Dr. Sassenberg is Head of the Social Process Lab at the Leibniz-Institute for Knowledge Media Research (IWM). The EASP, with over 1200 members, is the leading association of social psychologists in Europe.
Scientists from IWM took part in this General Meeting of the EASP by presenting more than 15 scientific papers.

2014-05-20  |  International Workshop on “Mass Collaboration and Education” at the KMRC
The Web 2.0 enables collaboration of very large groups of users, who learn and construct knowledge together. Such knowledge-related mass collaborations can be found, for example, in Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) or the online-encyclopedia Wikipedia. In order to bring together researchers who deal with these phenomena, the KMRC hosts an international workshop on “Mass Collaboration and Education” from May 21 till May 23 ( http://www.iwm-kmrc.de/workshops/iwmce/ ). This event, which is co-funded by the DFG, is organized by Prof. Dr. Ulrike Cress, Dr. Aileen Oeberst, and PD Dr. Joachim Kimmerle. Renowned researchers will present and discuss theories, methods, and tools, and in doing so, will contribute to the development of a research agenda on knowledge-related mass collaboration.

2014-05-16  |  Sonja Utz appointed professor for Communication via Social Media at IWM

Sonja Utz, PhD, an internationally renowned expert in the field of communication via social media, has been appointed professor at IWM. Sonja studied psychology at the Catholic University of Eichstätt (graduation 1996) where she also obtained her PhD for which she investigated social identification with virtual communities. After her PhD, she worked in Chemnitz and Amsterdam. Since April 2013 she is head of the junior research group Social Media at IWM which is funded through the highly prestigious starting grant awarded by the European Research Council. Under her leadership, the research group addresses the question how the use of social media (e. g., Facebook) can lead to emotional and informational benefits. With regard to knowledge exchange, she focuses on the professional use of business networks (e. g., Xing, LinkedIn) as well as enterprise social media.

This multifaceted subject offers a wide and diverse range for collaborations not only with other researchers, but also local businesses. Potential interested parties are welcome to contact Sonja directly at s.utz@iwm-kmrc.de.

2014-04-15  |  Workshop on possibilities of Serious Games.

Today partners of the cluster “Overcoming barriers to prevention and treatment of obesity in childhood and adolescence - a digital media approach” (Spokesman of the Cluster: Prof. Stephan Zipfel, University Medical Hospital Tuebingen) of Leibniz ScienceCampus Tübingen invite to the workshop "Development of Learning Games/ Serious Games in Health Educational Contexts: Challenges and Opportunities" at the Knowledge Media Research Center. Goal of this workshop is to illuminate possibilities of Serious Games or Learning Games in Health Education. Approaches researched in Tuebingen will be presented and discussed with international experts for this purpose.

Prof. Dr. Fernando Fernandez-Aranda is head of the „Eating Disorders Unit“ at the psychiatric clinic Bellvitge (Barcelona, Spain) and professor of psychology at the School of Medicine, University of Barcelona. He works in a leading role for the project „PlayMancer“, for which he was awarded the award „Best 2011 European Video Game for Health“. Tony Lam (Lausanne, Switzerland) is director of „NetUnion“. He develops Serious Games and online platforms in health education and treatment of psychological diseases and further has expertise in the transfer of (psycho-) therapeutic treatment approaches to computer-based game environments.
