Doctoral Candidates

IWM employees in dialogue

Promoting young scientists is an important task for the IWM. High-quality doctorates are key to excellent scientific work.

Regular exchange and planning

Doctoral students are therefore supported at the IWM by being integrated into a structured doctoral programme. Each (doctoral) project at the IWM becomes part of a working group or junior research group in which thematically similar projects are bundled. This structure offers our doctoral students the opportunity to meet regularly, exchange information about the research field and plan conference visits and publications. Doctoral students at the IWM usually do their doctorate at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen (awarded title: Dr. rer. nat.).

An overview of potential doctoral topics can be found in the current projects of our research groups and our job offers.

Contents of our doctoral programme:

  • Two supervisors accompany the doctoral programme.
  • Doctoral students are members of a working group or junior research group.
  • Weekly doctoral colloquium
  • Regular methods seminar and additional methods counselling, if required
  • Various further training programmes (e.g. workshops on academic writing, conference presentations, self management and project management)
  • Certified services
  • Doctoral students can draw on the expertise of the Media Technology and Media Development departments

Additional offers

  • Lab visits: PhD students have the opportunity to take part in lab visits, i.e. stays of several weeks with national and international cooperation partners.
  • Exchange at doctoral level: Our doctoral students are also very well networked across the working groups and junior research groups. Every new doctoral candidate receives from the beginning support from a person from the group of experienced doctoral candidates. . The doctoral students meet regularly in Doc Meetings for informal dialogue and once a year for a two-day retreat.
  • Liaison officers: Two elected counsellors support the doctoral candidates in the event of difficulties, conflicts, need for discussion or problems in connection with the doctorate. They advise, mediate or give referrals to other contact persons.
