Project description

Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly involved in written online communication and is already influencing the form of messages we receive, blurring the line between human and technological factors in communication. Several AI-based writing-assistants target interpersonal processes and perceptions, such as leaving a good impression on a message’s recipient, through modifications of message emotionality. However, the actual effects of such programs remain largely unclear.

As part of the cooperation network “Human-Agent Interaction”, this project aims to address this gap in knowledge by examining how the involvement of AI-based recommendations for message emotionality affects interpersonal interaction and impression formation in written online communication. Experimental studies are used to investigate the influence of recommendations characteristics and situational factors on users’ acceptance of recommendations and on recipients’ reactions regarding both interpersonal and task-related outcomes.
With an interdisciplinary approach, we seek to advance research on AI-supported human-to-human communication in online contexts and further the development of AI-based language modification programs alike.
